Brazil savings or CDB calculator: how much your money earns
How much an amount earns in the poupança (Brazil's regulated savings account) and in a CDB (a bank certificate of deposit) paying a percentage of the CDI (the interbank deposit rate), with today's official rates and the income tax of each term. The calculation runs in your browser.
Do the math
In 12 months, the poupança earns R$ 82.84 and the CDB, R$ 112.61 net of income tax
| Poupança: total at the end | R$ 1,082.84 |
|---|---|
| Poupança: income tax | exempt |
| CDB at 100% of the CDI: gross total | R$ 1,136.50 |
| Income tax (17.5% of the earnings) | − R$ 23.89 |
| CDB: net total at the end | R$ 1,112.61 |
| Earns more: CDB | + R$ 29.77 |
To earn the same as the poupança over this term, the CDB would have to pay 74.8% of the CDI.
From Sep 24, 2026 to Sep 24, 2027 (365 days). Estimate with today's rates repeated over the whole term: poupança at 0.6654% a month and CDI at 13.65% a year (Sep 21, 2026).
How the calculation works
Poupança: it earns 0.5% a month plus the TR (Taxa Referencial, a reference rate) while the Selic rate target (Brazil's benchmark interest rate) is above 8.5% a year (it is at 13.75%). In the period from Sep 24, 2026 to Oct 24, 2026, the yield is 0.6654%. The calculator repeats this rate every month. For individuals, the poupança is exempt from income tax (Lei nº 8.981/1995, art. 68, III). See the poupança yield by anniversary date (in Portuguese).
CDB: it earns the percentage of the CDI that the bank offers. The CDI of 13.65% a year is converted into a rate per business day (252 a year), and the business days of the term are estimated in the same proportion. On redemption, income tax is charged on the earnings, by the table of Lei nº 11.033/2004 (art. 1º):
| Investment term | Income tax |
|---|---|
| Up to 180 days | 22.5% |
| From 181 to 360 days | 20% |
| From 361 to 720 days | 17.5% |
| Over 720 days | 15% |
What the calculator does not consider
Future changes in the TR and the CDI, fees the bank may charge, and the IOF (the tax on financial operations) on redemptions in under 30 days (Decreto nº 6.306/2007, art. 32). In the poupança, the yield is credited on the account's anniversary date, on the lowest balance of the month: an amount withdrawn before the anniversary earns nothing that month. Calculator built by code from the official tables above, without a language model. The poupança uses the yield of the latest period published by Brazil's central bank, the Banco Central (SGS 195), credited every month; the CDB uses the annual CDI (SGS 4389) over 252 business days a year and the income tax table of Lei 11.033/2004. It is an estimate: rates change. The tables are updated when the government publishes new values (checked on September 27, 2026; how it works, in Portuguese).
